1CC23.0000.0065artworks (art)Momfords Poynt from Space, Oil on canvasSharon MalleyArtist statement: My reverence for the grace, beauty, and complexity of the Chesapeake runs deep. I grew up on the Wicomico River on land that was once the Indian town Tundotank. My maternal grandparents’ farmland, on the opposite Wicomico shore, was once Cottingham’s Creek, “Indian town,” or possibly called Rockawalkin, as it is today. My maternal grandfather’s ancestors lived in this area for many generations. My paternal ancestor might have been one of Captain John Smith’s explorers, Thomas Momford. Smith named Momfords Poynt after him, now Nancy’s Point on Lower Hoopers Island.
Hand drawing and painting this portion of Smith’s map enabled me to envision what they might have seen and experienced: a beautiful living world of birds, mammals, fish, and plants where land and water intertwined. By imagining his map from space, I could see a different kind of beauty: the gracefulness of the rivers as they intersect the land.

In my lifetime I have seen the water darken and rise, populations of crabs and Canada geese diminish, and it has really saddened me. But I have acted, volunteering with a lobbying group to address climate change. And now I have tremendous hope as I and so many others work as stewards for this marvelous estuary we call home.

Sharon Malley
Arlington, Virginia and Denton, MarylandCBMM catalog imageView
